One of the oldest communities in Thailand, Krabi dates back to the prehistoric period and comprises more than 130 islands.

Set in the south west, 814 km from Bangkok, Krabi has recently been described as the new Phuket due to the development taking place.

But while there is much to do in this lush province, limestone plateaus that rise spectacularly straight out of rice paddies and the sea seal the deal on its beauty.

White sandy beaches and clear waters filled with stunningly bright corals, make Krabi popular with tourists.

With the famous Phi Phi islands part of the province, Krabi is also famed for its Railay coast, Phra Nang Bay and Krabi Town, which has the cheapest shopping in the district but sadly, no sandy beaches to call its own.

Ao Nang is the centre of the tourist scene on Krabi mainland and is a good base to explore the region with a pretty palm-fringed beach.

Krabi Town, the capital is located at the mouth of the river and is a small typically bustling Thai market town.

Just south of Ao Nang is Railay, home to two beaches that some say are the most stunning strips of sand on the Krabi coastline.

But if you want to join the hippy chic crowd that has declared Phra Nang Bay Krabi’s most popular beach than it’s where you’ll find the perfect holiday excuse to simply do nothing.

2. The limestone rocks in Krabi attract climbers from all over the world, particularly at Railay and Ton Sai. Beginners are also welcome.

4. Set in a beautiful forest, the Tiger Cave Temple (or Wat Tham Seua) is a famous meditation centre where you can climb the 1237 stairs to the mountain top shrine for a view that will leave you breathless.

5. In the south of Krabi (70km from town) are nature’s own hot tub jacuzzis where the 35-40 degrees celcius water comes from thermal springs located deep underground in volcanic chambers. The nearby Crystal Pool in Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve, otherwise known as the Emerald Pool is worth a visit for the colour alone.
